The 2022 Cougar Softball season is just around the corner! Our girls will begin this season having graduated almost the entire starting nine and with a new state-of-the-art turf field, but expectations remain very high for this program. We caught up with new softball head coach Heydi Martinez after the Cougars’ first scrimmage against Tomball.
CCABC: “Hey, Coach. The first scrimmage was vs Tomball last week, what did you see out there that you liked?”
Coach Martinez: “The communication hands down! These girls were challenged several times and they communicated throughout every play.”
CCABC: “Any surprises you saw from players in the first scrimmage?”
Coach Martinez: “Not too many surprises because I know what the girls are capable of, but just seeing how much my starting pitcher (Amiee Morin) has progressed these last few years is an amazing sight to see. Oh, I cannot forget returning player Oli Sanchez’s dinger over the fence at her first at-bat of the season!”
CCABC: “Last season was super special for our girls, not only going undefeated in district but also with Coach Kight’s last year. As his successor, expectations are going to be high for you, but I’m sure you also want to make your own stamp on the program. How has this transition been, and how have the girls helped you with this?”
Coach Martinez: “I definitely have big shoes to fill. But luckily, I was able to walk alongside Kight for the last 6 years. In the years leading up to his retirement, Kight allowed me to set my own traditions, expectations, and culture for the program. So I would say, the transition has been pretty easy especially because we have so many new faces. They have been very receptive of my expectations, and we have a lot of fun growing as a new program.”
CCABC: “What message would you want to give to Cougar softball fans this year?”
Coach Martinez: “We are a completely new program. Everything is new! New coaching staff, new field, and lots of new faces. Come out and cheer us on while we battle it out to secure a playoff spot this year!”
