What an amazing four years it has been for Cougar basketball! The Cougars have an incredible record of 139-12, have won 3 district championships, won 4 regional championships, made the state finals, have had multiple college signees, and capped it off with 2 McDonald’s All Americans!
The one thing that is missing is that elusive state championship. The Cougars came so close last season, losing in the state title game to perennial power Duncanville. Since that loss, the Cougars have regrouped and reeled of 31 consecutive wins, none of which has been less than 11 points.
As the number 5 nationally ranked Cougars prepare to face the #19 nationally ranked Judson Rockets today at 3 PM in Goliad, I was able to spend a few minutes with National coach of the year finalist Coach Alexander.
What does it mean for you and the seniors to get back to the state tourney for the 3rd time in 4 years?
“Truly a blessing that this group of seniors don’t take for granted. The focus and drive to compete at an extremely high level is unmatched and they’re excited for the opportunity.”
With all the craziness this year, how have you been able to keep focused and play every game with a target on your back?
In reference to Covid year – Our athletic administration has been instrumental for the teams in CFISD to compete amongst a pandemic. The protocols in place have been necessary and appreciated to keep our kids safe and healthy. Our focus from the beginning of the year was to be better than we were the before. One foot in front of the other, one practice, one game at a time to reach our ultimate goal.
“You’re gonna have to face adversity to win a state championship”
I had been asked how will they respond when really tested, and there we were in the 3rd quarter vs shadow creek at 25-24, and we looked a little rattled. You called a great timeout, and they responded. What did you tell them in that timeout?
“I told them you’re gonna have to face adversity to win a state championship. This push that Shadow Creek made will only make us better to becoming a champion.”
What should Cougar fans expect from Judson? They are not new to the state tournament.
“Judson has been to state 5 times and has won it. With this opponent in Judson, they are athletic play up-tempo. We’ve always said whichever team rebounds-wins in big time games. So controlling the boards and playing at our tempo will be key.”
The Cougars face Judson today (Saturday) at 3 PM in Goliad, TX at Goliad H.S. 749 N. Church St , Goliad 77963. The winner will face the winner of Desoto and South Grand Prairie Thursday, March 11 at the Alamodome in San Antonio
